RIM announced it’s BlackBerry Presenter today which allows for delivering presentations from your BlackBerry directly via bluetooth. You basically connect the Presenter to the projector and instruct the accompanied BlackBerry App to present and off you go. No transcoding necessary. The Presenter apparently works with other bluetooth-enabled SmartPhones as well. It’s going for $199.99 USD on ShopBlackBerry.com.
As for competition, Impatica currently has an offering named ShowMate that allows you to do the same thing. The differences according to RIM are: (1) no transcoding is necessary using BlackBerry Presenter and (2) BlackBerry presenter can project at a resolution of 1024×768, compared to the Showmate’s 800×600. ShowMate also sells for $249.99 USD.
However, As pointed out by Michael Doyle, CEO of Impatica, “BlackBerry Presenter allows only the projection of PowerPoint presentations and lacks a USB connection option. The Impatica ShowMate allows projection of the BlackBerry screen making it an ideal tool for demonstration and training users of the BlackBerry and its many applications. Many organizations, especially government departments and police do not allow the use of Bluetooth. The USB option is mandatory for these users.” Also, Michael points out that Impatica is lowering the price of the ShowMate to $149.99 immediately.
When the ShowMate was introduced almost 4 years ago, it had a similar set of features that the BlackBerry Presenter has. And now with the ShowMate’s new price point combined with the ability to project the entire BlackBerry screen, it makes you wonder if the BlackBerry presenter is a little outdated and overpriced. Also, the USB capability of the ShowMate comes in really handy for locations where Bluetooth is not allowed, as pointed out by Michael, plus I imagine it would be easier on the battery life.
So, which one would you choose?
